Exercise Terminology
RESISTANCE TRAINING TERMINOLOGY
COMPOUND
a compound exercise is an exercise that targets and utilizes multiple major muscle groups and joints at the same time. For example a squat primarily targets the quadriceps, but they also utilise your hamstrings, glutes, calves and core., .
ISOLATION PYRAMID SETS
performing an exercise or two, for a particular rep range and then working your way down to 1 gradually on each subsequent set. intended to fatigue the muscle. This type of training can be employed as an upward or downward sequence in weight or reps
SUPER SETS
A superset is a combination of one exercise performed right after the other with no rest in between . There are often references made to Compound supersets (two compound exercises)and isolation supersets (two isolation exercises)
GIANT SETS
A giant set consists of four sets of four different exercises working the same muscle group quickly moving from exercise to exercise without any rest in between.
TRI SETS
Three different exercises performed one after another, without any rest in between.
PRE/POST EXHAUSTION
• Pre-exhaust involves using one isolation exercise prior to one compound exercise.
• Post-exhaust involves using one compound exercise prior to one isolation exercise.
DROP SETS NEGATIVE/ECCENTRIC TRAINING
Utilises the eccentric (Lengthening)phase of a movement.
Can allow you to take your muscles past their normal point of failure.
